All around the world people are making money playing video games.
These are not the best gamers in the world, or the most popular streamers. These are average, everyday people making money playing games.
For many people in developing countries it’s a significant pay raise over their “normal” job. And it presents a safe way they can make money, have fun, and be a part of a transformative community.
How it works?
In the normal gaming world, players put time, effort and energy into a game but never see any real economic benefit. All of the money spent in the game goes directly to the companies involved in creating and publishing the game, not to the players themselves.
Enter blockchain gaming, where the perspective is different. The idea is simple: what if the game company only takes a small percentage of the action and distributes the rest to the in-game participants?
In this way, an entire digital economy could develop on top of the game. One that, in theory, could be much bigger than any normal game has ever been.
Gaming companies would win by taking a small percentage of a much bigger pie, and players would win from actually being able to make money participating in a game.
It all sounds great on paper, but does it work in practice?
The Rise of Axie Infinity
There is a project that is currently realizing the dream of blockchain gaming in a big way: Axie Infinity.
As of this writing, billions of dollars of transactions have happened in their marketplace this year, and over two and a half million people per day are actively playing the game. These numbers are likely outdated as I write them, given how quickly Axie is growing and spreading across the world.
Amazingly, a good portion of the player base have replaced their full time income just playing the game. In some cases, they are making more than doctors or programmers in their home country.
As astounding as it is, Axie Infinity has developed a real economy which has gone from nothing to a very big something. From 0 to 1.
The Problem
There is a problem though. In the case of Axie Infinity you need to buy three “axies” (the in-game cute little creatures) to actually play the game. The cost of these can be significant, ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars depending on the kind of Axies you want to buy.
For most people, this makes the game inaccessible due to the cost.
The Solution
Of course, the free market has a solution to the problem: “Scholarship” programs have developed that allow players to get a loan of axies at no cost to themselves. They then split the rewards they earn from playing the game with the scholarship sponsor.
This allows players easy access to the game with no up front investment, and allows them to “Play-to-Earn” without going into debt and taking the risks of a traditional loan.
